What Is Fatty Liver Disease?: Fatty liver disease, also called hepatic steatosis, happens when too much fat builds up in your liver. When this occurs, it's called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).*
Several risk factors could lead to NAFLD, including:
Genetics
High cholesterol
Insulin resistance or Type 2 diabetes
Obesity or weight gain
*Recently, the medical community has updated the terminology around fatty liver disease:
Fatty liver disease is now called steatotic liver disease
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is now called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)
People who have MASLD and increased alcohol use are now identified as having MetALD
How Is Fatty Liver Disease Treated?: If you’re diagnosed with fatty liver disease, your doctor will work with you to create a treatment plan.
Your plan may include:
Avoiding or limiting alcohol
Clinical trials
Dietary changes
Lifestyle modification counseling
Maintaining a healthy weight
Medication
Nutrition counseling
